Going Grey Ch 27 Running Up That Hill

Read Chapter 27 Running Up That Hill here…

“What trip?” Elliot walks into the kitchen where we are standing. His progress is painfully slow but he insists on staying on his feet as much as he can manage when we are at home. He begins lurching from bench to refrigerator in a practiced move as he gets himself a drink and a snack. Mike hovers at the ready but Elliot makes it look easier than I know it is. There have been a couple of times when he has fallen, unable to get up in the middle of the night and we’ve struggled to move him. I know I’m frowning as I consider all the implications of us going right now and weigh them up against what could happen if we don’t. In the end the only person who can make this call is Elliot.

“Honey, Christian thinks we should get to Haiti, now.”

A big shout out to Glory2Bee who was the first person I read on Fanfiction to use the term ‘The Compound’ to reference Christian and Ana’s mansion.

Looking in your eyes, my „whys” receive an answer
Your words inspire me and my home is in your skin
What a tender love, my devotion, you came to be my religion
My sweet feeling, i am not repenting anything
Let the moments on your mouth and body, live
Woman…

It was worth anything that was necessary in order to be with you, love
You are a blessing
The hours and the life at your side, dear
Are for living them, but in your way
Congratulations, because it was worth

You are a blessing
The hours and the life at your side, dear

I see you and i convince myself that you had to come
After the storm, here on your chest, i can anchor
And to be more myself, again myself and for flag, my illusion
And look if i love you, i am submitting for love

Finding Prince Charming

Dear Lashell Collins posted today about being a romance junkie and our need to indulge in fictional boyfriends.  A new blogging and fan fic friend Rachel J Lewis was also lamenting the need for the fictional boyfriend recently.  I sympathised with her plight when she highlighted all the ways that her Significant Other wasn’t quite matching up to those between the page Princes that we know and love.  But I have to admit, that after the week month from hell, my experience was somewhat different and when life smacks me in the face, my fictional boyfriends don’t quite cut it.  Don’t get me wrong, I love a romantic fictional alpha as much as the next girl but not as a replacement for the real thing.  More as an enhancement of the real thing because when it comes down to it, the prince in your arms is worth two on the pages.

So here is my Tribute to SuperGeek.

First, I have to tell you about my life at the moment.

My work is more stressful than it has any right to be but mostly it is that way because of a system that quite frankly likes to fuck with people’s minds and lives.  Consequently, I have been working 14 hour days for most of the past four weeks (because these things come in waves) and pretty much 7 days a week.   In fact, I deliberately snuck off for a mini-break in the first week of June because I knew it would be like this with very little let up before November.  Every year for the past four has been like this and I don’t know why this year should be any different.  Oh, hang on, yes I do, more students enrolled, more timetabling headaches, more resource dilemmas, more staff to manage and somehow, less time to do everything.

So last week I got to the end of another, particularly stressful week and I broke.  Quite literally.  When you find yourself sitting on the floor of the shower at 10pm in your good work clothes crying because you can’t get the shower screen clean, then you know there is something seriously wrong.

And this is how I know that I married a prince.  First, he wrestled the cloth out of my hand and took me to the couch to wipe my tears and hold me while I cried.  Then he made me tea, sent the kids away, turned everything off and talked with me.  Listened to all the shit things that were overwhelming me and best of all, helped me make a plan. He helped me to see that I could put one more foot in front of the other but we would do it together and even better, we would do it in the morning.  Then he tucked me into bed and he held me all night.

The next morning he brought me breakfast in bed and then my computer so I could start working on those steps. All through the day he checked in, reminding me gently what they were, which order they had to happen and cheering me on until they were done and I could breath again.  Oh, and he also made me take regular breaks and got me out of the house to feed me.

That is the way of the Prince.  But it isn’t always about those big moments cos that is when you hope that your partner will step up.

No, it is the little every dayness that makes him a true prince.  The way that he has taken on the cooking in our household and therefore the shopping.  The way that he apologises for being late home if he gets held up past 6pm.  The way he knows what deoderant I use, my brand of feminine products, my favourite meals to order out and my brand of tea (even though he never drinks the stuff).  He doesn’t complain when I spend money and he takes me out to lunch or brunch on weekends just to be alone with me.  He taxi drives the kids on the late night pick ups because he knows I don’t like driving at night.  And, I never have to ask him to help out around the house.

Then there are those special things between the two of us.  The way he spoons me every night before he goes to sleep.  The fact that he still thinks I’m sexy even though I am twice the girl he married.  The pride he takes in the fact that I have a doctorate (apparently I am the smartest person he knows and I married beneath me) and I gained it after he wrenched me and the kids away from family and friends to relocate to Australia (I hope he has forgiven himself for that one). The way he touches my face and kisses me goodbye every morning before he leaves for work and the way he greets me with a kiss and makes me a drink in the evening when he gets home to remind me to stop work for a while.

If I had to say what makes him better than my fictional boyfriends?  He grounds me, reminds me that nothing is ever really as bad as I think it is and he makes me laugh, every day.  That, ladies and gents,  is the sexiest damn thing on earth.

Book Review: Gabriel’s Inferno – The Long Slow Burn

Gabriel's Inferno (Gabriel's Inferno, #1)Gabriel’s Inferno by Sylvain Reynard

Enigmatic and sexy, Professor Gabriel Emerson is a well respected Dante specialist by day, but by night he devotes himself to an uninhibited life of pleasure. He uses his notorious good looks and sophisticated charm to gratify his every whim, but is secretly tortured by his dark past and consumed by the profound belief that he is beyond all hope of redemption. When the sweet and innocent Julia Mitchell enrolls as his graduate student, his attraction and mysterious connection to her not only jeopardizes his career, but sends him on a journey in which his past and his present collide. An intriguing and sinful exploration of seduction, forbidden love and redemption, “Gabriel’s Inferno” is a captivating and wildly passionate tale of one man’s escape from his own personal hell as he tries to earn the impossible…forgiveness and love. – Goodreads

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I want to give this 3 1/2 stars but I can’t work out how.

I tried three times to start this book and then a few Facebook friends decided to set it as a reading project so I dedicated a space of time to starting it again. At 1/3 of the way in I thought I was totally hooked. I was a little desperate about having to put it down and go to work. My investment, I thought, was complete.

But then, when I got past the half way point, the boredom set in again. I don’t doubt that Reynard’s ability to weave in all those renaissance elements to a modern day love story is quite amazing and makes this work unique. I would go as far as to say that I am in awe of his talent and attention to detail. BUT as a personal preference, the slow agonizing pace of the love story bothered me. In fact, by 3/4 of the way through, it downright annoyed me. The voices in my head were yelling at him to just get the hell on with it.

The other aspect that lost me, was Gabriel’s language. I know he is an expert and an academic, but there were times when I wanted to slap Gabriel and tell him to stop being so f’ing pretentious. What started off as a little unique and seductively quirky started to come across as creepy and gratingly archaic. I know it gave him an ‘other-worldly’ quality, but if I dated someone that went on like that I would start to doubt their sincerity. There would be moments where I would be thinking ‘you’re having a go, aren’t you?’ So from that point of view Gabriel wasn’t a romantic hero that grabbed me but I can see how he could appeal to other readers.  Julia/Julianne/Beatrice (how many names does this girl need?) went from interesting to strong-willed and intelligent to a little bit pathetic and troubled and back again.  Part of me cheered when she seemed to realize that Gabriel was perhaps a little too messed up to commit to and started to back off.  She was certainly learned and could quote the classics back to Gabriel as good as she got but she became a little simpering towards the end so I was ready to smack her for a whole other reason.

Having said that, I still have great respect for Mr Reynard’s authorial talent.  He is lyrical and interesting in his prose.  He creates great images of the ephemera of the story.  I just wouldn’t be saying to anyone that this can be compared to FSoG.  There are some fundamental differences that go beyond the fact that he is simply a better writer than EL James that just might disappoint someone reading it on that basis.  It is, however, a really nice loves story.

Wicked Ties (Wicked Lovers, #1)Wicked Ties by Shayla Black

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Believe it or not, this was one of the last of the Wicked Lovers series that I read but having done that I didn’t have any problem with falling for Jack as a hero. He agrees to be interviewed by LA talk-show host, Morgan, for a feature on the world of BDSM. Only Morgan is being stalked and Jack being the wonderful southern alpha that he is, takes her under his protection. Through Jack and Morgan we meet a few characters who will come back in later books. There is a delightful tension in the way their relationship develops and a much stronger take on submission. The setting for their hideout adds to the plot, along with some quirky side-characters.

Goodreads Synopsis

She didn’t know what she wanted until he made her beg for it…

Morgan O’Malley has seen a lot of kinky things as the hostess of a cable sex talk show. But she’s never met a man like Jack Cole before. A self-proclaimed dominant, he’s as alpha as a male can get–and good for Morgan to have around when an obsessed stalker ratchets up his attempts to get to her.

Though Jack is a bodyguard, Morgan feels anything but safe in his presence. Because slowly and seductively, Jack is bringing her deepest fantasies to the surface. And when he bends her to his will, what’s more shocking than her surrender is how much she enjoys it–and starts to crave his masterful touch. A willing player in Jack’s games, Morgan knows that his motives aren’t pure, but she has no idea how personal they are.

Decadent (Wicked Lovers, #2)Decadent by Shayla Black

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kimber is a real tomboy who is trying on her sensuality for size. By rights she should be in a world of trouble when she seeks out Deke and Luc to train her for a relationship with rock star Jesse McCall. But whereas Jesse was only playing at the lifestyle, Deke and Luc live it. Luckily for Kimber her initiation is in the right hands. I loved the relationship between Deke and Luc. Deke might be all alpha but he has some very deep insecurities and it is with the help of Luc and Kimber than he begins to move past these. Kimber is written so well in terms of her coming of age story. She makes mistakes but she is brave and determined when it comes to her men. Luc is an alpha in beta clothing. He cooks, he cleans, he keeps house and he wants the white picket fence and babies but he has a few insecurities of his own. These characters had great depth and the sex was off the charts, hot!

Goodreads Synopsis

Two men are better than one…

How can a virgin seeking happily-ever-after with a hot pop star who has a penchant for threesomes win her fantasy man? Kimber Edgington desperately needs a plan to convince Jesse McCall, who’s been her friend and secret crush since they spent a summer together as teenagers, that they are meant for each other. But all the tabloid stories about his sexual escapades make her feel oh-so inadequate.

Determined to prove she’s woman enough for Jesse, Kimber turns to bodyguard Deke Trenton for sexual education. Bold and brash, Deke warns Kimber that playing with him is playing with fire. But he can’t bear to imagine the innocent beauty in someone else’s arms. So Deke and his super-sexy friend, Luc, take Kimber under their wings and dangerously close to the edge of ecstasy. Though she’s saved herself for Jesse, Kimber soon learns, he’s not the man adept at stoking her aching, endless need. That’s Deke, and he can’t resist when Kimber begs for more–and more.

She recruits Luc to assist her with her latest business venture, a restaurant and that is when things get hot. Luc still wants the perfect life and family but he is also afraid of his wilder side. Alyssa is smart and sexy and the only woman who could handle what he has to give. She is also being pursued by someone else. It is such a great set up with these characters. Surrender to Me (Wicked Lovers, #4)Surrender to Me by Shayla Black

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this story. Kata and Hunter end up in a relationship that neither of them wanted but nor can they resist. There is passion and tension and heartache throughout along with a major threat to Kata’s physical well-being. Along the way she learns what it means to submit and he falls in love while learning to forge a future with her that is not dominated by the past. There are beautiful tender moments and a really hot sensual scenes that leave you reeling. We also get to find out more about the back story of the Edgington family and their very troubled past. Overriding everything is a passion that Hunter can’t and won’t deny for this strong tempestuous woman. Every woman should be loved like this.

“Coming deep inside her while staring even deeper into her eyes, he’d known for the first time in his life what it was to feel something beyond desire. No way was he letting her walk out of his life without a fight.”

Goodreads Synopsis

A secret fantasy.

Hunter had everything until a bullet put his career as a Navy SEAL on hold. Restless and uncertain about his future, he accepts an intriguing proposition: share an acquaintance’s girlfriend and fulfill her fantasy of a ménage. It should have been just a night of sexual adventure between three consenting adults. But Kata is like no other girl Hunter has ever met. By turns audacious and sexy, then vulnerable and aloof, she’s a heartbreaker he’s determined to master. But he needs more than one night. And he wants to do it alone.

An uncontrollable obsession.

Hard as she tries to resist, the guilty pleasure overwhelms her, and she surrenders herself, inch by inch, to the hardcore man who wants her for himself. Consumed by blazing desire, they’re soon threatened by the shadows of the past. And now to keep Kata safe, Hunter makes her a bold proposition of his own. Saying yes will destroy her heart. But saying no could cost Kata her life.

Belong To Me (Wicked Lovers, #5)Belong To Me by Shayla Black

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my introduction to Shayla Black and what an introduction it was. I had resisted menage up until this point, I really didn’t think it was my thing. Shayla Black had me reconsidering my relationship to it as a reader. She is a really great writer, the plots move along and the characters are sublime. I loved the back stories of Logan and Tara that created such great tension as he tries to prepare her to go undercover in a sex ring. The relationship with Xavier was just enough to give me a taste of what Shayla Black’s writing is all about. Even though this is number 5 in the series, it is still a good entree into the Wicked Lovers series.

Goodreads Synopsis

She’s undercover and in over her head…When FBI analyst Tara Jacobs’ fellow agent and best friend goes missing while investigating a sex ring, Tara goes undercover as a submissive in a Dallas BDSM club called Dominion. But no man can top a woman with Tara’s moxie convincingly enough—until an edgy, dangerous Dom takes control of the scene and sets her heart racing with a single, commanding glance. Too bad he’s also the man who stole her innocence years ago—and the one to whom she will never submit.

Mine to Hold (Wicked Lovers, # 6)Mine to Hold by Shayla Black

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After indulging in the Wicked Lovers books and being introduced to Tyler Murphy in the earlier stories I really didn’t expect to like him so much. He even starts this story as the potential target of an intervention for his man whore ways. But when in the midst of all of this Delaney turns up on his doorstep and asks him to look after the child he never knew existed while she fights for her life we immediately get why he has commitment issues. It is what he does next that will rock your world as a reader. It certainly did mine. Once again, the sexual relationship is off the charts but the emotional journey is so amazing, even in the face of a dangerous adversary and a desperate situation. Delaney and Tyler have the fight of their lives to deal with and the way that the emotional relationship is drawn together is breathtakingly good.

Goodreads Synopsis

A friend’s duty.
Tyler Murphy was an LAPD detective, single and happy—until a near-fatal tragedy crippled his friend, fellow detective Eric Catalano. While Tyler supported Eric, he also became a shoulder for Eric’s wife, Delaney, to lean on. But with one naughty suggestion from Eric, a drunken night with Delaney spilled into erotic abandon. Before it was over, Tyler saw his best friend’s wife as a woman and yearned for more. When Eric struggled to deal with the aftermath, Delaney begged Tyler to leave. Crushed, he fled to Louisiana, hoping to escape his longing for the one woman he could never have again…and unaware of what he’d left behind.

A lover’s desire.

After two years of living with regret, Tyler finds Delaney on his doorstep, her husband having abandoned her long ago. She’s protecting a shocking secret and desperately needs refuge from a stalker determined to see her dead. As they fight to stay alive and catch the killer, they struggle to resolve the guilt of their past pleasures. But they can’t deny that what was once a spark is now a flame burning out of control. To possess Delaney—body and soul—Tyler must heal her pain and thwart the evil that’s a mere breath behind her.

Mia Chapter 4: Fall for You

Chapter 4 Fall for You ….Read More Here

“And this is my brother, Ethan Kavanagh,” I still have my arm around Ana and by the look on his face I don’t think I will just hand back his new shiny toy. For a start Ana is a nice girl and she deserves better than to be some contractual obligation. I smile at him and he smiles back in that way that says ‘let the pissing contest begin’. En garde, Grey.

“Ana, baby.” And that is enough for Ana to go into submissive mode. Her body language and stance changes completely. Her demeanor is replaced by this kind of subservient compliance. Wow, I have seen this in criminal and combat relationships but never in a romantic relationship. It is quite something. I’d love to see more but then Kate drags me away.

“What the fuck was that?” Maybe Kate can tell me more.

“You just met Christian Grey, the dominant.” I laugh but I know that is exactly what I have seen. Somehow I need to get someone inside Escala. Ana might need protection.
