Christian Grey and Ana Steele are stuck in a rut. Beautiful, talented and wildly driven they have strong ambitions but they’re going to need each other to get what they want. However, their plans rest on their uncooperative and often self-destructive siblings. And a lot of people would be happy for them not to succeed.

“You asshole. You’re meant to be on my side. She said she was paid to be there for the photos. And you know I don’t do coke. Pot, pills occasionally and booze but never anything hard.”

Christian sighed. “Look, Elliot, I am on your side but since you never seem to know what is in the weed or the pills don’t you think that ‘hard’ is a relative term?” It was like dealing with a five year old. All talent and no responsibility. “Why do you take it, anyway? You haven’t written anything decent in months.”

“Thanks, dude. So ‘You’re My Everything’ is crap, huh?” Even Elliot couldn’t keep that line of reasoning up. Yes, the song had shot to number one on the back of the previous three hits from the first album that Awaken had released. It was also being sung all over the world by teeny boppers who couldn’t be more than eleven years old and it was not a patch on the music that Elliot used to write in college. They both knew it. He swallowed. “Fuck, I hate that shit.”

“So why do you do it?” They’d had this discussion before and got nowhere. The reason was Jack. The reason was the shit sold. The reason was that selling his soul for fame and fortune had eventually sucked the life out of him. The booze, the drugs and the whores that posed as fans were anesthesia against success. And success was killing him, one number one hit at a time.

Going Grey Chapter 28 Do You See What I See?

Read Ch 28 Do You See What I See? here…

Tent cities are alive and dancing with flapping laundry but the people are in a seemingly endless shuffle competing with the massive slow moving piles of rubble. We don’t have to stop for much in the way of traffic on our way to the government compound but our progress is certainly slow and steady as we negotiate slow moving foot traffic. We pass what might be loosely called a market square and I see a young woman haggling with a boy. She looks out of place, too well dressed for a local. He can’t be more than 16 but he has a weapon slung over his shoulder as he counts the wad of cash that she has just handed him. A young local girl stands nearby. Something about the woman looks familiar but I can’t place it. Something about the scene looks wrong but we can’t afford to get out and issue challenges. Not today, when we have so much at stake.

Going Grey Ch 27 Running Up That Hill

“What trip?” Elliot walks into the kitchen where we are standing. His progress is painfully slow but he insists on staying on his feet as much as he can manage when we are at home. He begins lurching from bench to refrigerator in a practiced move as he gets himself a drink and a snack. Mike hovers at the ready but Elliot makes it look easier than I know it is. There have been a couple of times when he has fallen, unable to get up in the middle of the night and we’ve struggled to move him. I know I’m frowning as I consider all the implications of us going right now and weigh them up against what could happen if we don’t. In the end the only person who can make this call is Elliot.

“Honey, Christian thinks we should get to Haiti, now.”

A big shout out to Glory2Bee who was the first person I read on Fanfiction to use the term ‘The Compound’ to reference Christian and Ana’s mansion.

“It’s okay, baby, I’ve got you.” My hand circles his back trying to give him some comfort and he leans into me. His breathing is labored for a moment and the water I hand him seems to help bring things under control. He takes a long drink before lying back on the bed.

“The doctor is on his way.” A second nurse puts her head in the door. The other nurse returns to her monitors and charts while Father Kelly slips out of the room, I hope to let the others know that things are okay.

“I ruined your dress.” His hand reaches down and strokes the wet, yellow stain that is setting on the satin fabric. He looks worried but I could care less. However, it’s not my nature to let him get off so easily.

“That’s gonna be a bitch to get out. Mom’s gonna kill you even if you are laid up in a hospital bed.”

“Nah, Julie loves me.” He grunts a little as he uses his arms to reposition himself.

Christian Grey appeared in her world and caused an emotional eclipse from the moment he arrived. An eclipse from which I would never emerge. I might have once offered her the warmth of the sun but he became her sun, her moon, her stars, her satellite and as they became so caught up in each other’s orbit that there was no room for anyone else. I tried. To my shame, I tried in an ill-advised move that I will regret to the end of my days. I pretended a confidence I never had and made my play that drunken night at the bar. And even though she was uncharacteristically drunk, she was not so far gone that she couldn’t slap me for making a pass at her.

Going Grey Ch 23 Don’t Speak

“I want to believe that Grace, I really do, but Elliot is decisive. You know, he knew on the day that we met that we were meant to be together. Everything from that moment on was about how to make that happen, even when it seemed that my father was set against it. God, even I fought it but he just knew. So, you see, if Elliot has decided to bow out of our lives in a worst case scenario then he is halfway out the door already.” Oh God, I feel like the worst kind of bitch for even thinking it and the only thing stopping me from biting my own tongue off is the look of complete agreement coming from Christian. And he knows because he would be exactly the same. One day I am going to have to warn Ana about this patently stupid gene that the Grey men seem to carry. As soon as I think of her, she appears at the door of the waiting room.
