Wednesday Review: Ten Tiny Breaths

Ten tiny breaths is a lesson in living. Kacey has come back from the dead having been the only person to survive a terrible tragedy that stole her parents and best friends. Four years later she is a study in running away from pain as she moves her younger sister, Livie and herself from Michigan to Miami to start a new life. In the process she casts off enough baggage to sink a ship and as reader you feel every bit of that weight being removed. However, Kacey has to decide if she is healing or buying into a different form of covering up her pain. The new friends in her life, Storm, her daughter Mia, workmate Ben, boss Cain and neighbor Trent can all see past her facade and encourage her to face her fears but not before one of them completely shatters her illusions of what friendship means and pulls her unwittingly back into her past.

This story has great pace and emotion. The characters are written well and Kacey vacillates from strong to vulnerable in interesting ways that don’t ever make her weak, even when she is going through an intervention. There are beautiful moments between Kacey and each of the other characters, lovely defining moments. There is also great tension when you wonder if she will ever really let go of her anger and find a way to forgive. What she learns in the end is that healing, forgiveness, living and loving all take one little step at a time. Although I felt a little let down by the ending, I can go back to the conversation in the two way mirror and know that I loved this book.
